英國每日郵報網站（MailOnline）報導，聽力學家警告，若戴耳機聽音樂的音量過大，可能導致聽力永久受損，甚至有耳聾之虞。專家建議以正確的方法使用耳機，以免遺憾終生。
紐約大學朗格尼醫學中心臨床副教授夏皮洛（William Shapiro）指出，年輕人尤其是高風險群，平均每五個青少年就有一人因為長期暴露於噪音之中，而有輕重程度不一的聽力受損問題。
夏皮洛說，左、右內耳的耳蝸各有大約15,000個毛細胞，其作用是透過震動接收、偵測音波。這些微小的聽覺細胞非常脆弱，而且無法再生，所以一旦受損就會造成永久的缺陷。這也是一些人喪失聽力的常見原因。
他說：「許多人是因為用耳塞式耳機（ear buds）聽音樂時，音量過大，而暴露於過大的噪音。」他指出，耳塞式耳機置入耳內，愈是接近耳膜（鼓膜），聲壓就愈高，愈可能傷害聽力，「只是從3分貝（DB）提高到6分貝，聲音強度就會加倍」。
夏皮洛建議戴耳機時採取下列自我保護措施。一，使用耳塞式耳機時，音量宜開到最大音量的60%以內，而且每天不宜使用超過60分鐘。二，建議使用具有降噪（noise cancelling）功能的頭戴式耳機（headphones），因為戴上降噪耳機可降低外部噪音，使用者便能調低用耳機聽音樂所需的音量。
